The Midland TLCA football team has had to forfeit its first four district games because of injuries and grades.
Eagles head coach David Willis confirmed the decision by the school's administration on Tuesday afternoon after the Eagles are down to 11 healthy or eligible players.
"Our numbers were pretty low to start the season and then grades kind of hurt us," Willis said. "We had four more injuries in the last game at Kermit (a 64-0 loss on Friday)."
The Eagles (0-3) were scheduled to begin District 5-2A Division II play at 7 p.m. Saturday against Eldorado at Astound Broadband Stadium. TLCA will also have to forfeit games at Iraan (Sept. 30), at McCamey (Oct. 7) and at Sterling City (Oct. 14). The Eagles are open on Oct. 21 before a scheduled road game at Water Valley on Oct. 28.
Texas Football's Matt Stepp was first to report on the TLCA's forfeits.
The Eagles are playing their first season in 11-man after the previous two seasons as a six-man program and it hasn't been easy as TLCA has yet to score in a game.
TLCA had to cancel a non-district home game against Roscoe on Sept. 10 because of too many injuries.
"It's tough but we’re going to have to take some hits," Willis said. "We’re going to continue to build the program and we’re still going to keep coming."
